Björn Runge

Björn has worked with film, theater and television and radio drama since the 1980s. He is primarily interested in characters who possess a mind of their own and are searching for their own path in life. Scripts that embody both light and darkness with a comical touch, attract him. Actors often appreciate working with Björn as a director, as he is known for being in equal measure; stubborn and empathetic.

His film Om jag vänder mig om / Daybreak garnered both the Silver Bear for Best Artistic Ensemble as well as the Blue Angel for Best European Film at the 2004 Berlinale, main competition. Several of his films have been awarded the Swedish Film Institute’s annual distinction Guldbagge for Best Original Screenplay, Directing and in the Acting categories. In 2019 Glenn Close won both a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a feature film (Drama) and a Screen Actors Guild for the role as Joan in The Wife directed by Björn, as well as a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress. In Björn’s mind, the film’s script is the decisive factor for the final result. A solid script gives spring to the diving board the rest of us must dare to jump from, he says.

At the moment Björn is working on several tentative film projects: The Sea Change (screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewitcz, producer Barnaby Thompson), Stardream (writers Felix Harrison and Richard Wood, producers Claudia Bluemhuber and Jason Newmark), Joe Hill (script by Johan Nilsson, producer Glenn Lundh). Furthermore, Björn is currently writing a feature film for Swedish actors with the working title Under the Storm. Björn is also developing a true events series with Scandinavian Content Group.
