Irene Lopez stands as a prominent figure in the realm of Swedish cinema, with a diverse skill set encompassing directing, animation, and screenwriting. Her noteworthy filmography comprises compelling works, including Killing R (2023), premiered at the Gothenburg Film Festival in 2024, I Wanted a Family (2020), distinguished with the Tempo Honorary Award; and Pinocchio without a Nose (2012), the recipient of the Tempo New Doc award.

Beyond her role as a director, Lopez possesses a multifaceted background, excelling as an animator, documentary filmmaker, and fiction director. Her creations are renowned for their thought-provoking narratives, political undertones, and the frequent inclusion of strong female characters driving the storyline. Lopez’s distinctive style is characterized by a profound fascination for drama interwoven with elements of surrealism, horror, and sci-fi, all underscored by a nuanced touch of dark humor.

Lopez arrived in Sweden as a political refugee residing in Lund and Stockholm for a significant part of her life.

In 2003, Lopez earned a Bachelor’s degree in Animation from Konstfack, the School of Arts and Crafts. Subsequently, in 2012, she attained a Bachelor’s degree in documentary film from  SKH/Stockholm University of the Arts. Her academic journey culminated in 2023 with the acquisition of a Master’s degree in fiction film, also from Stockholm University of the Arts.

Lopez’s research at SKH, titled “The Told Untold and the Lost,” is a profound exploration into the translation of documentary film into fiction, showcasing her commitment to pushing the boundaries of storytelling.

Presently, Irene Lopez is actively engaged in the development of the feature film “R,” based on her novella “Clone Mother.” The short film “Killing R” serves as a compelling proof of concept for this ambitious project, a collaboration with the accomplished producer Tintin Scheynius.

Additionally, on the brink of completion is “Löftet”, a self-biographical documentary produced by Stina Gardell at Mantaray Film, that delves into the intricacies of being a guerrilla daughter, unraveling the profound consequences of family dynamics intertwined with the backdrop of war.

In summary, Irene Lopez’s remarkable journey, from her impactful filmography to her academic achievements and ongoing projects, solidifies her standing as a visionary storyteller and a significant contributor to the cinematic landscape. She is highly valued as a director by her cast and team who she always  includes in the process in an early stage.
